Food for Thought

The Freshmen 15 Photo by: Tyler Ball
As I have been here at Trinity, it seems that all I do during my long time awake is only a few things, which are; studying for school, going to football practice, and sleeping. Oh yeah and I eat when I have time to. Everyone that has gone to college that I have talked to has said, "You better work out a lot so you do not gain that 'Freshmen 15.'" I could see that happening since the only time I see other people besides football and class is in Coats or Maybee. But a big thing that I see as Trinity Life goes on is that no body is getting more obese than I have seen. So now I am wondering has this trend fallen off from the pasted years or is it just at Trinity that has not fallen into the trend of gaining that 'Freshmen 15.'
I have gone back to my hometown and seen many of my friends which was a great experience, but I did see them changing a little. One of my buddies from back home has grown a big beard and got a very little gut added on to him. Everyone else also has seem to added on that little gut that does not seem like much but by the end of this year will be just a normal gut. But here at Trinity all of my friends seem to be nice and fit and not really gaining and if they are it could be mostly explained through water weight.
The reason why I think most of the people in Trinity are physically fit are because of how there are a big percentage of Trinity students that are still playing some kind of sport for Trinity. With a lot of people in sports still means that there is going to be a lot of people in great shape and with the need for more studying since this college is a lot more rigorous than other colleges, means that there is less time for eating.
If you are a person that are losing weight because you are in season like I am, then the tips I can try to give you are try taking some snacks to class that is rich in protein. That little snack could definitely go far in giving you some pick me up during the tiring day. Lastly, if you could just get more rest during the day it could really help you with your all-around health.

The Midpoint

Image by: Sagolla (website to find picture)
When you are a Freshmen at Trinity-or any college in general-you tend to not have a very not so good first mid-term grades. Some of the reasons why could be being out too late, relationships, and just the freedom of away from home. I have done every single one of these things. During this blog I will try to give a background on what needs to be done on making it through the term alive and possibly helping you do better if you are already fine.
The best thing you can do now is evaluate yourself and see if you can find certain flaws that you have been doing over and over again. If you are a person that does not like to accept your flaws, then get over it. You are doing something wrong and your grades are enough evidence to prove that. If you can begin to notice these flaws, then you can change your way of doing things like homework and planning dramatically. Once you can find the right plan for you, then you will just be one step closer towards being more capable of making it through the year.
Another thing that you are going to do after you make this grand master plan is do the hardest part of getting better term grades is to put your plan into action. You might think that I am silly for saying this is the hardest part but I know from at least my experience that it very much is. The best way to show you an example is by asking how do you wake up in the morning? The way college students usually wake up is that their alarm goes off. "Briiiing, Briiiing, Briiiing." Then the students tend to want to stay in bed till they feel like waking up, which is about 10 to 15 minutes before the classes start. Waking up this late shows that for one, the person might have stayed up too late and for two, the do not have enough self-discipline to wake up in the morning. They want to, but mentally they are not up to the challenge. As the saying goes thinking it is just half the battle, but I think it is about only a quarter of the battle. The rest of the things that you need to do for this plan to become successful is putting it into action. Some of the ways that you can help yourself put this plan into action is to make certain incentives to help to you drive towards your goal of getting better grades.
If you can find that plan and put it into action, then I believe that you should be able to accomplish your goal and be able to make it all the way through this term.

Distractions of Trinity Life Part 2

Last time in my blog I talked about how cell phones are a big nuisance when you are trying to study, but there is something that might beat this. The social network of Facebook is probably the single biggest distraction in college. The reasons for this is because Facebook is easily accessible and it is a break time lengthener because of short attention spands.
The reason why Facebook is easily accessible is because most people in college today have a laptop or a desktop that is their own. With having your own computer, that means that you probably have a Facebook since you are a teenager. With this being a teenager you have a thing that I have diagnosed as short attention spands. With this disease that every teenager is plagued with that they are not able to stay focused on a particular subject for a long time. I have to admit that I, Sean Scott, am one of these people. And I know when I just can not study anymore. The way I try to cheat the system is by giving myself breaks to keep refreshing myself. The main thing I do during my time of rest is get on Facebook. When I get on I check to see if I got any messages, comments, or friend request, but after that I start check out the news I aways get stuck on some other persons news. Then I click on there profile and see that I know one of their friends. I do not have them as a friend so I add them. After the add I decide to go back to the homepage and start all over again not doing anything but waste time.
See the break is suppose to help you rest so you can go study or write a paper for a longer time, but all it does is tow things. One, it lengthens the time of your supposed break which, two, tires you out so that you shorten your actual study time and just fall asleep. As I said in the beginning Facebook is probably biggest distraction on Trinity's campus. You just have to make sure that you can control or limit your time on there because if you do not you end up like me-turning in my work late.

Distractions of Trinity Life Part 1

I have been walking around campus and all I seem to see in all of the Freshman halls are "What makes you procrastinate" and "How to make sure you stay focused during study time." The biggest thing that I see as a distraction is cell phones. In this blog I will be talking about the best ways I know of and have seen to overcome this problem.
California bans texting behind the wheelCell phones in the studying world are man's worst friend. These little devices sometimes can make or break the study time that you have. I have personally not gotten anything done for about twenty to thirty minutes because I was texting two or three people and I just did not want to stop the conversation. The problem is that cell phones are easily able to be put on your lap or close by so then when it goes off then you can stop everything that you are doing and text or talk to whoever you are talking to. Besides wasting time when you could be getting work done, there are many other things that impede you from finishing your work quickly. The best example I can think of is when you are on a roll with your writing that you are doing for a class and you stop to take a text. With taking this text you make yourself think of what to say in the text instead what you are working on. And if you forget about what you are working on then you fall into the horrors of writer's block. Once writer's block falls into play then you decide to take a break in which you text some more. More texting means more time for you to waste.
The best way I have heard used to overcome this big distraction is to just put the phone far enough away that you will not go up and get it. If you do that then you will not worry about what text you are getting and you will be no distracts or will there still be some? To be continued on my next blog.

First Days at Trinity

Some people say that the first couple days of college are scary. I guess Trinity did not get that memo because my first few days at Trinity were some of the funnest days of my summer (excluding football practice). The problem that I had coming in was that I had only listened to the people that must have not liked there college because they said it was HORRIBLE! I was not able to use a brother or sister for a second opinion on it because I am the first one to go to college. Now that I am here I wish I would have stopped being so scared and started being more friendly from the get go.

The people I really have to thank for making my transition from my home to college an easy one is the NSO Staff. They really have been able to find a great way to get people to mingle and have a lot of fun together.  I was just excited to wake up ever morning to a new thing every day.
One of the tips I might want to give to the Freshmen next (besides time management) is to be a sponge-go out and do as much as physically possible. Do not be afraid to go talk to some people that you have never seen before. That is what college is. Stepping out of your comfort zone and figuring out who you really are. This here is a picture of what some of the lower level (freshmen) dorms look like.
